Alan Zisman Gets an iPad

Low End Mac's Alan Zisman says:

The things I do for this column. I'm writing this just days after the Canadian release of Apple's iPad tablet computer. And just for you, dear readers, I had to get one. I only did it for you. Really.... So I'm writing this based on only 36 hours of hands-on experience. Nevertheless, that's long enough for me to reach a few conclusions.

First, you won't be making an iPad your only computer. You need access to a Mac or Windows computer just to get files onto it. You can't print from it. And even though you can buy a copy of Apple's Keynote presentation software (for a very affordable $10) and get a gadget to connect it to a standard projector, the iPad's Keynote won't project your presentation.....

Apple's Pages word processor for iPad can import and export files in business-standard Microsoft Word .doc format, but loses some formatting support and lacks features you may count on in a word processor like word count, for instance.

Alan says he doesn't miss multitasking or Flash much, but does miss the ability to edit online through Google Documents, finds that the glossy screen starts showing fingerprints almost immediately, and thinks that wile the iPad is probably going to be a winner, you shouldn't expect to use it in the same ways you're using your current computer.

Hello iPad, Goodbye Netbook

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt notes that as if Steve Jobs wasn't getting enough attention after his iPhone 4 keynote Monday, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty issued a note to clients Monday night that's basically a love song to his iPad, noting that the device iPad is on track to become the fastest ramping mobile Internet device out of the gate and at least partially responsible for a sharp drop in the growth of netbook sales. Huberty thinks the netbook phenomenon may have peaked and expects tablet sales to overtake netbooks by 2012.

What Does the Mac's Non-Presence at Apple's WWDC Mean?

ITManagement's Andy Patrizio says:

the forgotten child at apple's worldwide developer conference this year was the... macintosh computer. ceo steve jobs was on stage for an hour and a half... and didn't mention the mac once....

apple shed the "computer" portion of its name in 2007,...ut the mac remained an important part of apple's family.... yet when the schedule for wwdc was announced in april,... apple had dropped the mac software category from its apple design awards.

one mac developer wrote to steve jobs to complain.... jobs responded: "we are focusing primarily (though not exclusively) on iphone os this year. maybe next year we will focus primarily on the mac. just the normal cycle of things. no hidden meaning here."

it's not that the mac has suddenly become irrelevant. indeed, it's doing better than ever.

the research firm isuppli recently noted that mac enjoyed 32.4 percent year-over-year growth in the first quarter of 2010 with 2.94 million units sold, a faster growth rate than the 22.6 percent rate for the overall pc industry.

So can Jobs be taken at his word? Analysts think so.

Unloved Mac: Apple Disses the Desktop Again During WWDC Keynote

PC World's Jeff Bertolucci says:

What did the Mac do to deserve this? Lately it seems as if Apple management is giving its Macintosh platform short shrift, instead favoring its younger, sexier mobile devices, also known as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The latest affront occurred Monday during Steve Jobs' Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote... he failed to mention that Apple was also launching Safari 5, the latest version of the company's Web browser that comes with every Mac.....

Feel the burn, Mac developers.... Apple is a 'mobile devices company.' Jobs' team has made it perfectly clear in shareholder and analyst meetings.... While that strategy may include the MacBook laptop, the Mac desktop is definitely the odd device out.... Does the Mac have a future?

RIP, Macintosh?

Newsweek says:

Is Apple ignoring its signature line of computers and laptops? Yup.

Dear Macintosh,

I hate to tell you this, but my guess is you ve probably been sensing it already. I don't know any good way to say it so let me just be blunt: You ve been dropped. Dumped. It s over.....

The future of Apple is no longer centered around the Macintosh. You Mac guys just got kicked to the curb, relegated to the steaming dung heap of the past.....

Safari 5 Off To Apple's Traditional Rough Start

The Register's Rik Myslewski reports:

Updated Apple's Safari 5 has been out for just one day, but as is usual with integer-level upgrades, users are already reporting niggles, nuisances, and no-goes.

Apple Adds 'Make The Web Go Away' Button To Safari 5

The Register's John Lettice reports:

Steve Jobs didn't get around to mentioning Safari 5 in his WWDC keynote last night, but it rolled out anyway shortly after he finished up, and today publishers throughout the world are surely beginning to wonder, 'hang on, what's this Reader thing?'

Safari 5 has a nice little button next to the URL that effectively kills the ads, strips off the site's branding and presents the text in nicely-formatted book-style pages.

Apple Lifted 'Make Web Go Away' Button From Open Source

The Register's Cade Metz reports:

Apple Safari's new "make web go away" button is based on an open source project distributed under the Apache 2 license.

The Safari Reader, which debuted yesterday with version 5 of the Apple browser, is built using the source code for Readability, an Apache project from Arc90 Labs....

Apple does include a nod to Readability in its Safari acknowledgments (Help > Acknowledgments), but true to form, it never said a word to Arc90 or anyone else.....

Safari Reader: Apple's Weapon of Mass Destruction

Blogger Jim Lynch says

Steve Jobs gave his usual keynote address at WWDC today. The iPhone took center stage, as expected. But there was another announcement that web publishers should take note of and should dread: Safari 5.

The release of Safari 5 does not bode well for web publishers. Specifically, the inclusion of a feature called Safari Reader may ultimately prove financially devastating for many web publishers....

Apple has essentially destroyed the web publishing model completely with the release of Safari 5. This is the equivalent of dropping a nuclear bomb on the entire web economy. It's a weapon of potential mass destruction for web publishers....

We all know that Apple is an arrogant company. They've proven it many times in the past. And I say this as someone that owns an iPad, iPhone, iMac, etc. I'm not an Apple basher. But this really takes the cake......

Is Apple's Safari 5 a Publisher Killer?

Computerworld's Preston Gralla says:

The just-released Safari 5 promises faster performance, better adherence to HTML 5 standards and a few other goodies. But a nifty feature in Safari Reader also takes dead aim at online publishers, who could see significant revenue losses if Safari ever becomes popular.....a relatively small number of people use Safari compared to other browsers. But if that ever changes and Safari Reader becomes popular, it may spell very bad news for any Web site looking for revenue.

First look: Safari 5's Extensions

Macworld's Marco Tabini says that few new browser features are more prominent than the arrival of an extensions system, and with a Safari 5 extension system in place, developers are in position to augment the functionality provided by the browser itself, letting users add to Safari all sorts of capabilities that had previously been the domain of hacks and workarounds.

What Safari 5 Extensions Mean To Mac Users

Mac360's Jeffrey Mincey says:

Apple s Safari 5 for Mac and Windows is here. It s familiar, lean, clean, and fast. Oh, and it s ready for extensions. What are extensions? Why should Safari users care?

Software developers can create Apple blessed and approved extensions think of them as add on utilities that perform any number of functions that run in a secure sandbox....

One year from now the extensions for Safari are likely to number in the hundreds.

A First Overview and Roundup of Safari Extensions

MacStories' Federico Viticci says:

One of the most important features of Safari 5 is support for extensions: it s what Safari users had been wanting for a very long time, and it s a big deal. It s a big deal for users who want to customize their browser the way they want, it s a huge deal for developers who may start to charge for full-featured extensions in the future. Just think about Twitter clients or RSS apps living inside the browser.

Safari 5 has been available for 12 hours now, and some developers have already released their first extensions. Obviously these extensions are far from being complete and full-featured , but still it s worth taking a look at them, as they re giving us a glimpse at what devs might offer in a few weeks.....

At last week s All Things Digital conference, sponsored by the Wall Street Journal, both Steve Jobs and Steve Ballmer were front and center, on different days. Twitter to start using own link shortener, t.co, to shrink Web addresses starting this summer

Twitter to use own Web link shrinker this summer

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter plans to start using its own Web link shortener on addresses that users include in tweets.

Starting this summer, Twitter will use its new "t.co" domain name to shorten links that users post directly on Twitter.com or through applications such as TweetDeck. That will help the posts stay within the service's 140-character limit. The company is currently testing its linking technology with some employee accounts.

Users won't always see their links displayed as "t.co" addresses, though. If you get Twitter updates sent to your phone via text messaging, a link might show up as a "t.co" address. But you might see the full address or the Web page's title when looking at that same post on Twitter.com.

"Ultimately, we want to display links in a way that removes the obscurity of (a) shortened link and lets you know where a link will take you," Twitter spokesman Sean Garrett wrote on Twitter's blog Tuesday.

Garrett said that this method of packaging links is meant to improve user safety and will help Twitter gather data for its "promoted tweets," which are Twitter posts paid for by advertisers to appear in search results on the site.

He also noted that in March, Twitter started using its own "twt.tl" address to automatically channel links that users sent in messages directed specifically at another user. That was a way for Twitter to spot and cut down on the spread of malware and other unsavory content that links can lead to; Twitter can simply disable a "twt.tl" address if it led to a questionable site.

Twitter used to automatically shrink links on tweets as well — first using TinyURL, later using bit.ly — but the site doesn't currently do so. So if you want to share a long link with friends, you'd have to go to TinyURL, bit.ly or another service to shorten the link first.

Even after Twitter implements "t.co," Garrett said that users will still be able to use link shorteners of their choosing. This means you should still be able to take advantage of traffic analysis and other features that come with those services. But those shortened links will be converted into a "t.co" address.

The effect of Twitter's move on existing link shorteners is likely to be small. After all, they are also commonly used in e-mails, Facebook posts and other settings.

New UN sanctions on Iran for its suspect nuclear program

New UN sanctions on Iran for nuclear program

A resolution approved Wednesday by the U.N. Security Council by a vote of 12-2 with one abstention imposes a fourth round of sanctions against Iran over its suspect nuclear program. Here are the key points in the 18-page text:

NUCLEAR ISSUES:

— Reiterates demand that Iran suspend enrichment and comply with all requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency including its additional protocol which allows unannounced inspections of nuclear facilities.

— Calls on Iran to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty "at an early date."

— Bans Iran from any foreign investment in uranium mining, enrichment or reprocessing, production or use of nuclear materials and technology, heavy-water activities, and technology related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

MISSILES AND ARMS PROLIFERATION:

— Bans countries from selling eight categories of heavy weapons to Iran: battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, large caliber artillery systems, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, warships, missiles and missile systems.

— Bans all countries from supplying technical training, financing or other services for these weapons.

— Bans Iran from any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launching such a missile.

— Bans all countries from supplying technology or technical assistance to Iran for such activities.

INDIVIDUAL AND COMPANY SANCTIONS:

— Adds one individual and 40 companies and other organizations to a list of those subject to an asset freeze including 22 entities involved in nuclear or ballistic missile activities, 15 controlled or acting on behalf of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard Corps, and three linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines.

— Orders all countries to ban the 41 individuals now on the list from traveling to or through their territory.

ILLEGAL SHIPMENTS:

— Calls on countries to cooperate in inspections — which must receive the consent of the ship's flag state — if the vessel is suspected of carrying prohibited cargo.

— Bans the supply of fuel or services to Iranian owned or contracted vessels suspected of carrying prohibited cargo.

FINANCIAL AND BANKING MEASURES:

— Calls on countries to block financial transactions, including insurance and reinsurance, if there are "reasonable grounds" to believe these activities could contribute to Iranian nuclear activities.

— Orders all countries to require their nationals and companies operating in their territory "to exercise vigilance when doing business with entities incorporated in Iran or subject to Iran's jurisdiction."

— Calls on countries to ban the licensing of Iranian banks, the opening of financial institutions, or the establishment of new joint ventures if they have information that provides "reasonable grounds" to believe these activities could contribute to Iranian nuclear activities.

SANCTIONS ENFORCEMENT:

— Requests Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to establish a committee of experts to monitor implementation of all sanctions against Iran and calls for a first report 90 days after its appointment.

ENGAGEMENT:

— Stresses the willingness of China, France, Germany, Russia, Britain and the United States "to further enhance diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue and consultations … without preconditions" with Iran.

— Emphasizes the importance of political and diplomatic efforts to find a negotiated solution guaranteeing that Iran's nuclear program is exclusively for peaceful purposes.

— Notes in this regard the efforts of Turkey and Brazil toward agreement with Iran on a fuel-swap for the Tehran Research Reactor "that could serve as a confidence-building measure."

— Emphasizes in the context of these efforts "the importance of Iran addressing the core issues related to its nuclear program."

AT&T hole exposes iPad users’ e-mail addresses; hackers harvested data by tricking website

AT&T hole exposes iPad users' e-mail addresses

SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T Inc. on Wednesday acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.'s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted hacking attacks.

The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T's "3G" wireless Internet service.

It involved an insecure way that AT&T's website would prompt iPad users when they tried to log into their AT&T accounts through the devices. The site would supply users' e-mail addresses, to make log-ins easier, based on unique codes contained in the SIM cards inside their iPads. SIM cards are used to tell cell-phone networks which subscriber is trying to use the service.

The hacker group that claims to have discovered the weakness — the group calls itself Goatse Security — said it was able to trick AT&T's site into coughing up more than 114,000 e-mail addresses, including those apparently of famous media personalities and important government officials.

A representative for the group told The Associated Press late Wednesday that the group contacted AT&T and waited until the vulnerability was fixed before going public with the information. AT&T said the problem was fixed Tuesday but that it was alerted to it by a business customer.

Gawker Media Inc.'s Valleywag website earlier reported on the breach.

AT&T said it will notify all iPad users whose e-mail addresses may have been accessed.

"We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted," the company said in a statement.

AT&T noted that the only information hackers would have been able to steal using this attack were users' e-mail addresses. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts. Criminals could use that knowledge to trick them into opening e-mails that plant malicious software on their computers.

An Apple representative deferred requests for comment to AT&T.

Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since they went on sale two months ago. The iPad comes in two different flavors — one that only connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and another that also can connect through AT&T's "3G" cellular network. The Wi-Fi-only models aren't affected by the breach. Apple hasn't specified how many of each model it has sold.

Trade group says semiconductor sales should jump 28 percent this year

Trade group: Chip sales to jump 28 pct this year

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Revenue at the world's semiconductor companies will climb 28.4 percent to $290.5 billion this year, an industry trade group projected Thursday.

That growth will taper off to an increase of 6.3 percent in 2011 and 2.9 percent in 2012, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.

Chip sales have been rising steadily for months after the recession sapped demand and forced companies that buy semiconductors to slash their inventories.

SIA reported a 58 percent jump in chip sales for the first quarter of 2010 compared with the year-earlier quarter, and a 50.4 percent rise in April.

The recovery comes after a 9 percent drop in chip revenue last year to $226.3 billion.

"Healthy demand in all major product sectors and in all geographic markets drove sales of semiconductors to record levels in the first four months of 2010," SIA President George Scalise said in a statement Thursday.

He said SIA's forecast for the year is based on projected worldwide economic growth of 4.6 percent this year and 4.4 percent in 2011.

Emerging economies such as China and India will help lead the way as demand for information technology in those markets helps boost demand for chips, Scalise said.

Senate panel sends tougher auto safety requirements to Senate floor

Senate committee approves auto safety upgrades

WASHINGTON — A Senate committee Wednesday approved a bill that would require automakers to meet new safety standards, impose stiff penalties for companies that fail to quickly report defects and double funding for the government agency overseeing car safety.

The Senate Commerce Committee plan is part of a move by lawmakers to tighten the nation's auto safety laws following Toyota's massive recalls.

"This is a critical public safety bill that will affect the lives of millions of Americans on the road," Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., the committee's chairman, said.

Congress hopes to approve the safety legislation by the July 4 holiday recess. It represents the most significant reforms to auto safety rules since the Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. tire recalls of a decade ago.

A House committee approved similar legislation last month.

The Senate plan would require automakers to meet new standards related to brake override systems, vehicle black boxes and auto electronics in the aftermath of Toyota Motor Corp.'s recall of more than 8 million vehicles around the globe.

Under the Senate bill, companies could face penalties of up to $300 million for a slow response to a recall. Toyota paid a record $16.4 million fine for its handling of a recall but critics said the penalty was not severe enough.

Safety advocates also have questioned the ability of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to protect consumers from complicated safety defects. To address those concerns, NHTSA could see its annual budget grow from $140 million to $280 million in 2013.

Separately, the Senate committee approved the creation of a $120 million grant program for states that enact laws to bar texting and driving and the use of handheld cell phones behind the wheel.

To qualify, states would need to pass new laws or amend existing ones that would prohibit texting and driving, allow law enforcement officers to have the authority to pull over motorists who use their phones behind the wheel and create minimum fines.

Prisoner Of iTunes - The iPad File Transfer Horror

The Register's John Lettice notes that the iPad is light, compact, reasonably capable for typing, and it has very decent battery life, which would be enough to convince him to take the device seriously for note-taking, document viewing and manipulation, and stop carrying his MacBook Air around all the time, were it not for the "you can check out, but you can't leave" dynamic that obtains.

"The iPad is a conflicted machine," Lettice opines - a media consumption device and potential productivity tool, but also considerable potential to become an infuriating device to use - in particular the difficulty in exchanging files, the iTunes tether, and the iPad's status as a big iPhone that can't make phone calls.

[Editor's note: some of these issues appear to be addressed by the iOS iPhone/iPad operating system Steve Jobs announced yesterday, but not the file import/export constipation.]

The author observes that "It's possible to work around some of the iPad's insane file sharing restrictions using Avatron Software's Air Sharing HD, which is as essential from the point of view of sanity preservation as it is for getting stuff done."

Free "iPad Basics" Ebook Introduces Full iPad Documentation

TidBits' Adam C. Engst says:

Since our iPads arrived in April, they've consumed nearly every waking moment, but we haven't been lolling around reading ebooks, streaming Netflix, and eating bonbons. Xcode Projects - Publish a Book on the App Store

[Press Release]

Independent developer Chris Mayer has announced the release and immediate availability of three complete Xcode projects - Basic Book App for iPhone, Universal Basic Book App for iPhone and iPad, and Advanced Book App for iPhone. The 'Book' category is the fastest growing sector of the App Store. The iPhone and iPad have revolutionised the way people read. No longer are people carrying a book with them - they instead carry a whole library in their pockets.

Specifically designed to help authors publish their books on iPhone and iPad devices, these projects are ready-made Apps, just waiting for content to be loaded in HTML format. Anyone who can edit a HTML document can publish a book on iPhone. Pages can be created in any HTML editor such as Dreamweaver, and may use a variety of fonts and styles, as well as images within the pages.

Features:
(*) Supports standard HTML format pages, create using any popular webpage editor
(*) Include a variety of fonts and styles, and show images within your pages
(*) Loads audio for each page in .m4a, .mp3, or .wav format - for spoken pages or sound effects
(*) Saves progress through the book
(*) Flip pages forwards and backwards with the swipe of a finger
(*) 'Credits / How To Use' screen - accessable from an info button on the launch screen
(*) Heavily commented code - see exactly how it all works

The simplest and quickest way to create an iPhone and iPad app from a book. The Advanced Book Reader App features many enhancements, including animated page turns, automatic bookmarking, so when you launch the app you can continue reading from where you left off, as well as intuitive controls. Simply swipe the screen with a finger to flip between pages.

Three complete Xcode Projects made available to download for between $9 - $27 (USD). A video demo has been created to show how the Advanced Book App functions, and is available to view on the Chris Mayer's website.

The Tech Night Owl: The WWDC Report: An iPhone or a Tricorder?

In the days of the original Star Trek TV show in the 1960s, the crew of the starship Enterprise would explore a new world equipped with a handheld computer known as a Tricorder. According to the Wikipedia entry and the innate knowledge of any “Treker” on our planet, this gadget was “a multifunction handheld device used for sensor scanning, data analysis, and communication.”

Alcatel-Lucent to Launch 100 Gbps Optical Networking Technology

alcatel Alcatel-Lucent announced on Wednesday that they are going to launch 100 gigabits per second optical networking technology. 100 Gbps wavelength means  that the technology can transfer more than 100,000 MP3 files in 60 seconds or more than 15,000 HDTV channels streamed live. The company said they are using its  Next-Generation Coherent technology. The optical gear is designed to handle the bandwidth that is required for Web video, file sharing and movie downloads and the company already sold 100 gbps equipment to a customer.

The Next generation Coherent technology has gone through trials with more than 20 service providers. Alcatel-Lucent is trying to compete with Cisco to get first-mover advantage. On the other hand, Cisco last month bought CoreOptics, who develops 100 Gbps transmission technology. Cisco said that the new technology from CoreOptics will allow the service providers to offer with 100 Gbps gear. The 100 gbps optical gear is the brainchild of Lucent's high end network architecture. Alcatel-Lucent also claims that the new technology is compatible also with slower carrier equipment operating at 10 and 40 Gbps.

Apple's Magic Trackpad Revealed?

Engadget's Joshua Topolsky reports:

Of all the surprises we expected to hear about in the WWDC keynote, a multitouch trackpad peripheral didn't exactly pop into our brains. But - whoomp - here it is. What we appear to be looking at is a brand new input device that Apple has dreamed up which connects to desktops (and laptops, if you like) via Bluetooth, much like the Apple Keyboard......

Moving to Mac: The Trackpad

Web Worker Daily's Scott Blitstein says:

One of my biggest concerns with my move to Mac was adjusting to a touchpad interface. I've used IBM ThinkPads for years and have grown accustomed to the TrackPoint. TrackPoints are getting scarce, though, and the Trackpad on the MacBook is a highly lauded feature. My friend Christelle even went so far as to call it life-changing. With praise like that, my expectations were high. How well does it stack up?....

Mac Or Windows: Making The Switch To MacBook

Embedded.com's Jack Ganssle says:

I've been lured by Steve Jobs siren song, at least for the laptop.

I have only been to an Apple store on two occasions, both recently, both after the iPad came to market. Each of those trips was both awful and fascinating.... I am still unsure how one actually goes about purchasing something....

....I like the idea of having native access to Unix, rather than a DOS command line shell, and the battle with Vista on my desktop left me unwilling to iterate that experience....

The MacBook is absurdly-priced... but it comes out of hibernation instantly... is very fast, and has seamless WiFi. The touchpad supports one, two, three, and even four-finger manipulation which is confusing at first, but greatly speeds navigation.

The machine, both physically and graphically, is simply beautiful, something that once would mean nothing to me. But my wife is an artist and she has instilled some level of appreciation for beauty in me....

Larry Magid: Steve Jobs Is A National Treasure

Mercury News's Larry Magid says:

I don't always agree with Steve Jobs, especially with the level of control Apple exerts over iPhone and iPad developers. But that doesn't change the fact that the man is a national treasure. When the history of the 20th and 21st centuries is written in stone, I have no doubt that Jobs will take his place along with Albert Einstein and Henry Ford.

Why I Fired Steve Jobs

The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber says:

As Apple's CEO introduces his new iPhone today, and its market cap passes Microsoft's, the man who infamously fired him, John Sculley, tells The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber about his regrets, their rift and how their partnership could have worked: Jobs should have been CEO, and Sculley's boss, rather than the other way around. Plus, other 1985 board members on Jobs then and now, and where they are today.

Macintosh Portable Recalled

businessmirror.com's Presy Alba says:

In 1989 Apple's first attempt at making a laptop the Macintosh Portable was met with raves from critics but poor sales from the consumers because of the price issue. To be fair, it was very expensive because Apple spared no expense in the construction: it had all the bells and whistles of a desktop Macintosh and it was portable.

It featured cutting-edge design elements that virtually determined how laptops are designed today....

Why I Don't Like The Mac And Loved The Nissan GT-R

TG Daily's Rob Enderle says:

I can like and respect Apple but I've never personally been attracted to Apple products.

The closest was Apple's second generation iMac which I still think is one of the coolest PC designs of all time (though I wanted it in black). However I've often had a hard time articulating why I don't like Apple products. They are attractive, they are easy to use, they are expensive but I tend to buy expensive things, and people stand in lines to buy many of them.

Earlier this week I went on an Exotic Car Excursion where I got to drive a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Porsche, a Lotus, an Austin Martian, and a Nissan GT-R. This experience was put on by the San Jose outlet of an outfit that rents exotic cars to drive called Club Sportiva.....

I m going to give you my impressions of each car, which car was most like an Apple product (to me), and why I wouldn't buy one.

Samsung invests $3.6 billion in Texas chip plant

AUSTIN, Texas — Samsung Electronics Co. said Wednesday that due to projected heavy demand for its advanced logic chips the South Korean company will invest $3.6 billion to expand capacity at its plant in Austin, Texas, and hire 500 more workers there by 2011.

Samsung will raise its employee count at the facility to 1,500 from 1,000 by next year, boosting annual payroll to about $105 million. The expansion, which builds out the second phase of its 2.3 million-square-foot complex, will bring its total investment in the Austin plant to more than $9 billion.

Most of the new employees with be engineers and technicians. In addition, the company said almost 3,000 construction workers and equipment vendors will move in and set up the machinery. The plant will build advanced logic devices for Samsung's system large-scale integration business and continue to make NAND flash memory chips, which are used in consumer electronics such as digital cameras, thumb drives and MP3 players.

"Forty-five nanometer and below advanced logic applications are in high demand and respective markets are expected to show substantial growth in the coming years," said Stephen Woo, executive vice president and general manager of Samsung's System LSI division.

Samsung expects the facility will be operational by the second quarter of next year.
