Analyst sees Apple’s iPhone on the T-Mobile network as soon as this fall

By AP

Ahead of the Bell: Apple's iPhone on T-Mobile?

NEW YORK — The iPhone will be available on other cell phone networks as early as this fall and will likely come first to T-Mobile USA, one analyst who follows Apple Inc. closely said Thursday.

In a note to investors, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu said his checks with Apple suppliers and others suggest AT&T Inc. will lose its exclusive place as the iPhone carrier no later than the first half of next year.

One reason T-Mobile is a likely candidate is because the company's wireless technology is similar to AT&T's. BlackBerry HDW27288004 Bold 9700 Skin Dark Blue. Sprint and Verizon Wireless use a different wireless standard, so converting the iPhone to run on their networks would presumably involve more technical hurdles.

Wu said T-Mobile also sees the iPhone as key to winning back lost customers, meaning the company will be more likely to settle for Apple's terms.

"T-Mobile does not comment on rumor or speculation," T-Mobile USA spokesman Peter Dobrow said Thursday.

"Would we like to offer the iPhone to T-Mobile customers in the U.S.? You bet. Ultimately though it is Apple's decision on who carries its product," Dobrow added.

In any case, Wu said, Apple needs to sign up another U.S. carrier to keep up the pace of iPhone sales and counter the rising competition of phones that run on Google Inc.'s Android software.

Neither Apple nor AT&T have said when their exclusive deal is slated to end.

In midday trading, U.S.-listed shares of T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom rose 40 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $11.33 amid a broader market rally. AT&T shares were up 44 cents at $25.34, while Apple climbed $3.26 to $246.46.

Review: Microsoft’s Web Apps are free, but limited, taste of Office

Review: Web Apps are limited free taste of Office

NEW YORK — This week saw the launch of a free version of Microsoft's flagship Office software, available online. In other news, hell just froze over.

The idea of Microsoft Corp. letting people use its software for free will take some getting used to. But rest assured, it makes sense: The new Office Web Apps are rather stripped-down versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

In our test, it's evident that Microsoft is positioning these free "Web applications," which run in a browser, as extensions of and supplements to its full Office suite, rather than as standalone replacements in the vein of Google's Docs, which has been available since 2006.

That said, the free Microsoft programs can still prove valuable for those who don't want to buy the software. Microsoft is releasing its latest version, Office 2010, to consumers next week. The "Home and Student" package, which consists of the same four applications that are available on the Web, will cost $149 for the full, packaged product, and $119 for a download.

In particular, the Web Apps will be helpful for those who collaborate with people who have the full Office suite. You can open documents they send and modify text, spreadsheets and so forth. But the bulk of the formatting will still need to be done with the desktop application.

The Web Apps can also be a standalone alternative to Google Docs, if your demands are low. You can create, share and print new documents in the browser. Web-created Word documents may satisfy many users, while PowerPoint decks will be very crude.

As is Microsoft's intent, the Web Apps are most useful to those who also buy the software. You can shuttle your documents back and forth between the desktop and Web versions. For instance, if you have Office on your work computer, you can now make changes from your home computer, even if it's a Macintosh or a puny netbook.

So how do you access the Web Apps? If you have a Windows Live or Hotmail account, you will notice a link to "Office" at the top of the screen after you log in. Otherwise, sign up for an account. The files will live in a Web-based "SkyDrive" tied to the account.

A word about browsers: If your computer is on the old side, or a low-powered one like a netbook, you'll want to avoid using the Web Apps with Microsoft's own Internet Explorer. In my test on a computer that's seen four or five summers already, typing in the Word Web App using Internet Explorer 8 was painful. The text took too long to appear, and the sentence wavered up and down as if I were hammering on a mechanical typewriter. The app simply overloaded the PC's processor, and it was unable to keep pace with the typing.

I didn't have the same problem when using Internet Explorer on a new, faster laptop, nor was it a problem when I used the Firefox browser on the old PC. Google Inc.'s Chrome browser did an even better job of keeping the load on the processor light, though an add-on program that makes it easy to send Web documents to the desktop version of the Office program does not work in Chrome.

Here's a rundown of the Web Apps, and the differences from the offline versions:

Word — The most fully featured of the apps. You can type, check spelling, set headlines, create tables and insert pictures. BlackBerry ACC31612301 Pearl 91XX Skin Green Waterl. You can't tweak the margins, create columns, or access footnotes or comments, though you can view all these features in a "Reading View" if they've been added in the desktop program. Note that unlike the other Web Apps and Google Docs, Word Web App does not automatically save your document as you work — you have to hit the Save button. Google Docs' word processor is more fully featured, but fancy stuff, including footnotes, doesn't work well when imported into Word.

Excel — You can enter data and formulas in spreadsheets and have them calculated correctly. You can't adjust the layout of the sheet or create pie charts or other graphics. Oddly, you can't move cells or columns around: You have to cut them out, make space for them somewhere else, and then paste them. You can't open some spreadsheets that have "comments, shapes or other objects."

PowerPoint — You can edit text and add slides, but you can't adjust graphic elements. If you have an arrow pointing the wrong way, you can delete it, but you can't make it point the right way. You can create a presentation with pre-formatted boxes and diagrams, but your options are very limited. The Web App is mostly good for minor edits or last-minute changes.

OneNote — Microsoft's sleeper Office app, designed to help you collect information and notes in one, easily searchable place. The Web App lets you paste pictures into your notes, but the more useful features of the desktop program, like inserting PDFs and clippings from Web pages, are missing. The app is supposed to be able to send notes to the desktop program and vice versa, but this didn't work — I got error messages instead. A Microsoft representative said this may be a symptom of the flood of users trying the Apps this week.

The iPad is making appearances all over the White House

The iPad is making appearances all over the White House

by J.J. on Jun.11, 2010, under iPad News

the white house ipads

So if you’re wondering why it’s taking sooooooo long for any movement on health care reform or DADT it’s because the entire White House staff is obsessed with Scrabble on their iPad’s. Just kidding. Sort of.

According to the Washington Post everywhere you look in the White House these days you see an iPad. Specifically, almost  everyone in the West Wing office of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has an iPad or an iPad on order. I guess White House security clearance doesn’t get you an iPad any faster than anyone else when there are shortages.

The Post reports “Emanuel just got his, as did senior adviser David Axelrod and deputy press secretary Bill Burton. Both communications director Dan Pfeiffer and press wrangler Ben Finkenbinder have one on order. Economic adviser Larry Summers takes his to staff meetings.”

So of course, the Post wanted to know what apps everyone was using. Warranty Solution 1 Year PureMobile Warranty U450. I mean isn’t that the first thing you ask your friends when you’re talking about your iPads? “Summers has the Bloomberg app for financial information, says adviser Matt Vogel. Also Scrabble. And the first book he downloaded was a free copy of “The Federalist Papers.” Burton, who has been a bit of an iPad evangelist at the White House, has the app for Vanity Fair magazine, Scrabble, a news app and the entire last season of ABC’s “Lost.” Emanuel has “all the newspaper apps,” says a top aide, and has installed the iBooks app so he can read books on the device. Axelrod has only downloaded a couple of apps so far, his assistant, Eric Lesser, said. They include the Major League Baseball app and the National Public Radio one.

There’s no word on whether or not Mr. President himself has adopted an iPad, but we do know in the past his allegiance was to the Blackberry.  But he’s got to be a bit jealous when he sees Joe Biden on his.

AT&T hole exposes iPad users’ e-mail addresses; hackers harvested data by tricking website

AT&T hole exposes iPad users' e-mail addresses

SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T Inc. on Wednesday acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.'s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted hacking attacks.

The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T's "3G" wireless Internet service.

It involved an insecure way that AT&T's website would prompt iPad users when they tried to log into their AT&T accounts through the devices. The site would supply users' e-mail addresses, to make log-ins easier, based on unique codes contained in the SIM cards inside their iPads. SIM cards are used to tell cell-phone networks which subscriber is trying to use the service.

The hacker group that claims to have discovered the weakness — the group calls itself Goatse Security — said it was able to trick AT&T's site into coughing up more than 114,000 e-mail addresses, including those apparently of famous media personalities and important government officials.

A representative for the group told The Associated Press late Wednesday that the group contacted AT&T and waited until the vulnerability was fixed before going public with the information. AT&T said the problem was fixed Tuesday but that it was alerted to it by a business customer.

Gawker Media Inc.'s Valleywag website earlier reported on the breach.

AT&T said it will notify all iPad users whose e-mail addresses may have been accessed.

"We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted," the company said in a statement.

AT&T noted that the only information hackers would have been able to steal using this attack were users' e-mail addresses. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts. Nokia DC 6 Car Charger Retail Packaging. Criminals could use that knowledge to trick them into opening e-mails that plant malicious software on their computers.

An Apple representative deferred requests for comment to AT&T.

Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since they went on sale two months ago. The iPad comes in two different flavors — one that only connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and another that also can connect through AT&T's "3G" cellular network. The Wi-Fi-only models aren't affected by the breach. Apple hasn't specified how many of each model it has sold.

Apple's Magic Trackpad Revealed?

Engadget's Joshua Topolsky reports:

Of all the surprises we expected to hear about in the WWDC keynote, a multitouch trackpad peripheral didn't exactly pop into our brains. But - whoomp - here it is. What we appear to be looking at is a brand new input device that Apple has dreamed up which connects to desktops (and laptops, if you like) via Bluetooth, much like the Apple Keyboard......

Moving to Mac: The Trackpad

Web Worker Daily's Scott Blitstein says:

One of my biggest concerns with my move to Mac was adjusting to a touchpad interface. I've used IBM ThinkPads for years and have grown accustomed to the TrackPoint. TrackPoints are getting scarce, though, and the Trackpad on the MacBook is a highly lauded feature. My friend Christelle even went so far as to call it life-changing. Incase CL55199 Coated Canvas Black. With praise like that, my expectations were high. How well does it stack up?....

Mac Or Windows: Making The Switch To MacBook

Embedded.com's Jack Ganssle says:

I've been lured by Steve Jobs siren song, at least for the laptop.

I have only been to an Apple store on two occasions, both recently, both after the iPad came to market. Each of those trips was both awful and fascinating.... I am still unsure how one actually goes about purchasing something....

....I like the idea of having native access to Unix, rather than a DOS command line shell, and the battle with Vista on my desktop left me unwilling to iterate that experience....

The MacBook is absurdly-priced... but it comes out of hibernation instantly... is very fast, and has seamless WiFi. The touchpad supports one, two, three, and even four-finger manipulation which is confusing at first, but greatly speeds navigation.

The machine, both physically and graphically, is simply beautiful, something that once would mean nothing to me. But my wife is an artist and she has instilled some level of appreciation for beauty in me....

Larry Magid: Steve Jobs Is A National Treasure

Mercury News's Larry Magid says:

I don't always agree with Steve Jobs, especially with the level of control Apple exerts over iPhone and iPad developers. But that doesn't change the fact that the man is a national treasure. When the history of the 20th and 21st centuries is written in stone, I have no doubt that Jobs will take his place along with Albert Einstein and Henry Ford.

Why I Fired Steve Jobs

The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber says:

As Apple's CEO introduces his new iPhone today, and its market cap passes Microsoft's, the man who infamously fired him, John Sculley, tells The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber about his regrets, their rift and how their partnership could have worked: Jobs should have been CEO, and Sculley's boss, rather than the other way around. Macintosh Portable Recalled

businessmirror.com's Presy Alba says:

In 1989 Apple's first attempt at making a laptop the Macintosh Portable was met with raves from critics but poor sales from the consumers because of the price issue. To be fair, it was very expensive because Apple spared no expense in the construction: it had all the bells and whistles of a desktop Macintosh and it was portable.

It featured cutting-edge design elements that virtually determined how laptops are designed today....

Why I Don't Like The Mac And Loved The Nissan GT-R

TG Daily's Rob Enderle says:

I can like and respect Apple but I've never personally been attracted to Apple products.

The closest was Apple's second generation iMac which I still think is one of the coolest PC designs of all time (though I wanted it in black). However I've often had a hard time articulating why I don't like Apple products. They are attractive, they are easy to use, they are expensive but I tend to buy expensive things, and people stand in lines to buy many of them.

Earlier this week I went on an Exotic Car Excursion where I got to drive a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Porsche, a Lotus, an Austin Martian, and a Nissan GT-R. This experience was put on by the San Jose outlet of an outfit that rents exotic cars to drive called Club Sportiva.....

I m going to give you my impressions of each car, which car was most like an Apple product (to me), and why I wouldn't buy one.

G8 and G20 must address online privacy

G8 and G20 must address online privacy

-It’s the least we can expect for our billion-dollar investment

It’s hard to imagine governments acting in citizens’ social media privacy best interests when they themselves often seem so inept in terms of integrating social media within their own respective environments. For every example of a government department success story using social media tools and principles, there always seems to be a counter-example that illustrates just how many elected leaders and civil servants still have their heads in the sand when it comes to Web 2.0 and beyond. All-staff Twitter bans and continued sequestering of data that could help the public in hierarchical and disconnected silos, anyone?. HTC Screen Protectors

Despite our leaders’ difficulties in making social media the new normal for government-citizen interaction, the need for our elected officials to help facilitate the transition to a Web 2.0-based economy has never been greater.

Facebook, for example, has garnered more than its fair share of headlines over the past couple of years for its propensity to play fast and loose with the rules of privacy and confidentiality. To its credit, the Privacy Commissioner’s Office has stepped in and forced Facebook to up the level of its privacy game – a process that has set a global precedent and positioned Canada as a leader in understanding and implementing real-world online privacy/confidentiality standards.

But this is only one example among a pretty desolate landscape. There are precious few other examples of governments – Canadian or foreign – taking truly bold steps to force market-dominant companies like Facebook and Google to play nice when it comes to citizens’ private data. For the billion-plus dollars we’re “investing” in the G8 and G20 summits, it would be nice if we at least got some answers on how member governments – especially our own – intend to not only meet the challenge, but get and stay ahead of the rapidly advancing curve.

If governments at all levels fail to exercise at least some influence over the evolution of privacy standards in the Web 2.0 and post-Web 2.0 era, it’ll be left to profit-seeking ventures to determine what’s fair and appropriate for the rest of us. Enterprise leaders and consumers alike are right to shudder at the prospect of Mark Zuckerberg holding the keys to the privacy kingdom. If anything comes out of these meetings, it’ll be consensus on how to keep tech giants honest – and citizens protected.

Prisoner Of iTunes - The iPad File Transfer Horror

The Register's John Lettice notes that the iPad is light, compact, reasonably capable for typing, and it has very decent battery life, which would be enough to convince him to take the device seriously for note-taking, document viewing and manipulation, and stop carrying his MacBook Air around all the time, were it not for the "you can check out, but you can't leave" dynamic that obtains.

"The iPad is a conflicted machine," Lettice opines - a media consumption device and potential productivity tool, but also considerable potential to become an infuriating device to use - in particular the difficulty in exchanging files, the iTunes tether, and the iPad's status as a big iPhone that can't make phone calls.

[Editor's note: some of these issues appear to be addressed by the iOS iPhone/iPad operating system Steve Jobs announced yesterday, but not the file import/export constipation.]

The author observes that "It's possible to work around some of the iPad's insane file sharing restrictions using Avatron Software's Air Sharing HD, which is as essential from the point of view of sanity preservation as it is for getting stuff done."

Canada introduces anti-spam law as spam URLs become pervasive

Canada introduces anti-spam law as spam URLs become pervasive

The Government of Canada recently re-introduced anti-spam legislation, titled the Fighting Internet and Wireless Spam Act (FISA), in the House of Commons. The goal of the proposed legislation is to deter damaging and deceptive forms of spam and help drive spammers out of the country.

FISA is an important step in the ongoing fight against spam. The May 2010 MessageLabs Intelligence Report indicated that, in Canada, 89.4 per cent of email was spam. The global ratio of spam was 90 per cent.

Analysis revealed that nine out of 10 spam emails now contain a URL link in the message. In May, five percent of all domains found in spam URLs belonged to genuine web sites. Motorola V80 Original LCD with frame. Of the most frequently used domain names contained in spam URLS, the top four belong to well-known web sites used for social networking, blogging, file sharing and host other forms of user-generated content.

Domains belonging to well-known web sites tend to be recycled and used continuously compared with “disposable” domains which are used for a short period of time and never seen again. This is perhaps because some work is involved in acquiring them: the legitimate domains require CAPTCHAs to be solved to create the large numbers of accounts that are then used by spammers.

While Rustock is the botnet that uses the greatest number of disposable domains, Storm, which has recently returned to the spamming scene, is the only botnet that uses genuine domains in greater number than disposable domains.

Sixty-five per cent of spam from the Storm botnet uses a legitimate domain, many of which are for URL shortening services. Disposable domains are often used quickly after being first registered, and on average, 50 per cent are used within nine days, before spammers switch to newer domains.

Also, MessageLabs Intelligence intercepted a malware attack featuring the theme of The FIFA World Cup competition that starts in June. Composed in Portuguese and featuring the branding of one of the event sponsors, the email was sent from an IP address in Macau, China.

Once downloaded and activated, the malware produces files that generate pop-up messages and in the background collects information on what other machines are on the same network, enabling the attacker further access to the compromised computer.

The May level of email-borne viruses in Canada was one in 230.9, while the global ratio was one in 211.6. Malware may penetrate an organization in many ways, including drive-by attacks from compromised websites, Trojan horses and worms that spread by copying themselves to removable drives.

The most frequently blocked malware for the last month was the Sality.AE virus, which spreads by infecting executable files and attempts to download potentially malicious files from the Internet.

With spammers and cyber criminals remaining as active as ever, legislation such as FISA can help flush out malicious and illegitimate activities and make sure that Canadian organizations follow better business practices.

NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN

NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN

On May 14th the Anglophone sector of the New Brunswick Department of Education released its proposal on how to shift our public education system to a 21st Century learning model. The plan was developed using a co-leadership model with principals and district leaders, and the consultation document will now be used to engage our teachers.

John Kershaw

As New Brunswick teachers were each allocated a notebook computer, for the first time in history we were able to forward a copy of a draft learning strategy to every teacher, for their advice and counsel.

The plan, entitled 21st Century Learning (NB3-21C) is available for review at our departmental website: http://www.gnb.ca/0000/index-e.asp.

While the three year plan is quite comprehensive, four key elements are emerging as critical pillars to success. Let’s call them the CRT2 formula, where C is Creativity, R is Relevance; the first T is Time and the second, Technology.

Creativity

Public education in the industrial era was founded on discipline and facts. In the 21st Century individual and societal success will be founded on creativity. Creative thinkers will be in demand to guide business innovation and to solve complex societal issues, some of global proportions.  NB3-21C is designed to produce creative problem solvers. Today, creativity trumps regurgitation of facts. Facts you can access on the internet.

Relevance

The OECD, EU, Partnership for 21st Century Skills in the United States, and many authors are calling for significant changes to what students learn and how teachers teach.  NB3-21C calls for a complete assessment of our Essential Graduation Requirements, curricula outcomes and instructional practices to determine which ones are truly relevant to the 21st Century learner.

Time

Last year, 50% percent of the students at a local high school missed 50% of their classes in December. When asked to explain why, they stated that school was a waste of their time.

The response is an alarm bell from two perspectives. First, the students found school irrelevant to their needs (see above). Secondly, students value their time.

Society invests millions of dollars every year in educating our youth, so of course we value their time. XMI X mini Happy Capsule Speaker Black. But do we give serious consideration to and value every minute they are giving us? There is urgency here. We need to position each and every child to reach their full potential, within a set time allotment.

New Brunswick’s school calendar equates to roughly 170,000 minutes of instruction between kindergarten to grade 12. We have students at school for only 170,000 minutes! Throw in a few snow days and instruction time decreases accordingly. For NB3-21C to be successful, we will be examining our school calendar, instruction time allocations, lessons, activities, instruction, and learning environment in an effort to make every instruction minute engaging to and relevant for our students.

And at the same time, we know we need to strike the right balance between a student’s instruction time, and our teachers having the time to plan for instruction. Seeking the advice of our teachers on this issue will be critical to finding solutions.

Technology

The 21st Century Age of Knowledge is rooted in rapid advancements in information and communications technology. ICT facilitates access to information for every student via the internet. We intend to create ICT rich learning environments because students deserve to have access to the tools of their generation in the classroom.

NB3-21C’s focus is on producing creative problem solvers, being relevant to our students and using their time wisely. This will include creating ICT rich learning environments, where each student can access information at his or her own speed of learning.

AT&T security hold exposes iPad users’ e-mails; hackers harvested data by tricking AT&T site

AT&T security hole exposes iPad users' e-mails

Motorola C139. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts.

We draw the top 10 iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 3GS comparision of features.

1. Display

iPhone 4 retains the size of 3GS with a 3.5 inch diagonal. It's completely different with 4 times as many pixels with the so-called retina display.  Not just that iPhone 4 flaunts a 4 times the pixels of earlier iPhones, you can feel the difference between the glass you touch and the pixels that are removed.

3. Camera

iPhone 4's camera is a much-hyped issue, especially with the HD video recording facility.  But, it won't match the best camera phones. Still its excels the 3 megapixels iPhone 3GS with 5 megapixels camera and an added LED flash. What's more, you have a front-facing camera for FaceTime Wi-Fi video calls and more.

4. HD Video recording

With a Flip Mino HD like video quality iPhone 4 is a giant leap in terms of video recording. Just 9.3mm in thickness, 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS, the Jony Ive (iPhone 4).  iPhone 4 measures 0.37 inch deep whereas iPhone 3GS's thickness stands at 0.48 inch. Further, iPhone 4 is slightly narrower, 2.31 inches to 2.44 inches. The two models weigh the same 4.8 ounces, still the tweaks to the dimensions make the iPhone 3GS seem more sludgy in comparison to the newest iPhone.

7. 3 axis Gyro

The most advanced feature added to iPhone 4 is the 3-axis gyro that takes motion-sensing in mobiles to a new level. When paired with the accelerometer, iPhone 4 can perform advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, angular velocity and rotation rate. With the inclusion of gyro, iPhone 4 will offer motion gestures and greater precision to elevate the gaming experience.

8. External buttons and inputs

Overall iPhone 4 inherits the same form factor and buttons, but it adds an extra mic button to offer better call quality through noise cancellation.  Evidently there has been no alterations in the button sizes or location, but the volume of button has been separated into up and down.
