EU warns against proprietary software
BRUSSELS — The European Union’s top Internet official took aim at Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, warning that governments can accidentally lock bookmark php themselves into one company’s software for decades by setting it as a standard for their technology systems.
EU Internet Commissioner Neelie Kroes, in her previous post as EU antitrust chief, fined Microsoft hundreds of millions of euros (dollars) in a lengthy row over the company’s refusal to share some data with rivals and the tying of a Web browser to a best-selling operating system.
She now says she wants to draw up detailed guidelines for European governments to encourage them to require other software, especially programs based on open source code that is freely shared between developers.
The final programs are sometimes — but not always — given away to users. IBM and Oracle, for example, charge customers for some software they bookmark php make that is based on open source code.
Kroes is aiming to influence government tender specifications which can demand all suppliers to the state to stick to a certain type of technology. This can have a massive impact by favoring one company’s software over others.
She cited tax departments requiring the use of a specific Web browser to file online tax returns.
“Many authorities have found themselves unintentionally locked into bookmark php proprietary technology for decades and after a certain point that original choice becomes so ingrained that alternatives risk being systematically ignored,” she said.
“That’s a waste of public money that most public bodies can no longer afford,” she told a conference organized by Open Forum Europe, a group of technology companies that want to promote software based on open source code.
She openly favored open software saying users could choose between “the one that you can download from the Website and that you can implement without restrictions or the other one which you have to buy which is restricted to certain fields and which requires royalty payments for embedded intellectual property rights — and the answer is obvious.”
Governments should have a “clear justification” if they mandate proprietary software that sets royalties and restrictions, she bookmark php said.
Google Inc. has tried to rival Microsoft’s office programs by providing similar software for free — something it can afford to do because it develops most of its revenue from selling advertising linked to widely used search engine. Microsoft relies mostly on selling the software it develops.

AT&T security hole exposes iPad users’ e-mails
SAN FRANCISCO — AT&T Inc. on Wednesday acknowledged a security weak spot that exposed the e-mail addresses of apparently more than 100,000 users of Apple Inc.’s iPad, a breach that could make those people vulnerable to precision-targeted bookmark php hacking attacks.
The vulnerability only affected iPad users who signed up for AT&T’s “3G” wireless Internet service.
It involved an insecure way that AT&T’s website would prompt iPad users when they tried to log into their AT&T accounts through the devices. The site would supply users’ e-mail addresses, to make log-ins easier, based on unique codes contained in the SIM cards inside their iPads. SIM cards are used to tell cell-phone networks which subscriber is trying to use the service.
The hacker group that claims to have discovered the weakness — the group calls itself Goatse Security — said it was able to trick AT&T’s site into coughing up more than 114,000 e-mail addresses, including those apparently bookmark php of famous media personalities and important government officials.
A representative for the group told The Associated Press late Wednesday that the group contacted AT&T and waited until the vulnerability was fixed before going public with the information. AT&T said the problem was fixed Tuesday but that it was alerted to it by a business customer.
Gawker Media Inc.’s Valleywag website earlier reported on the breach.
AT&T said it will notify all iPad users whose e-mail addresses may have been accessed.
“We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted,” the company said in a statement.
AT&T noted that the only information hackers would have been able to steal using this attack were users’ e-mail addresses. But that can be enough to launch a highly effective attack, since the attacker also knows that the person receiving the e-mail is an iPad user and an AT&T customer and would expect to receive e-mail from Apple and AT&T about their accounts. Criminals could use that knowledge to trick them into opening e-mails that plant malicious software on bookmark php their computers.
An Apple representative deferred requests for comment to AT&T.
Apple has sold more than 2 million iPads since they went on sale two months ago. The iPad comes in two different flavors — one that only connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and another that also can connect through AT&T’s “3G” cellular network. The Wi-Fi-only models aren’t affected by the breach. Apple hasn’t specified how many of each model it has sold.

Use iPhone app to identify no-fee ATMs
Want to save money when you travel? Sure, you can look for cheap airfares, budget hotels and discount car rentals. But here’s a simple change that blue ant s1 bluetooth car kit can save you big bucks over the long haul: Stop paying ATM service fees.
After all, why should you pay a few dollars to withdraw money from a machine just because your bank doesn’t have a branch nearby?
Fortunately a handful of apps can help you locate ATMs that won’t charge you fees.
I tried two on my iPhone, and both were free. So it costs you nothing to save some dough on the road or even in your hometown.
The first app I tried is from Allpoint. It’s a network of about 37,000 ATM locations around the world. A few thousand are in the United Kingdom and the rest are in blue ant s1 bluetooth car kit the U.S.
The ATMs are usually in drug stores, retail outlets and the like. The network charges you zero to withdraw money — though your own bank might charge you something for using an out-of-network ATM.
The app is easy to use. You can search from your current location or by address. It shows nearby Allpoint locations on a map or in list form with distance noted. I used it awhile back to find an ATM close to work. It turned out that machine was even closer than the bank I’d used occasionally at $3 a pop.
Allpoint’s app works seamlessly with the iPhone’s map function to give directions to whichever location you choose. The network also offers apps for BlackBerry and Android smart phones.
I also tried CO-OP Network’s app. It bills itself as the largest credit union-only ATM network in the country. For those with credit union accounts, blue ant s1 bluetooth car kit the app serves much the same function as Allpoint.
It has fewer locations than the first app. And it was a bit slower on my iPhone. There were fewer locations as well. The credit union app offers a link to the location’s website and shows it on a map or in list form. But it didn’t offer step-by-step directions like the Allpoint app.
But either one can save some serious money over time. Consider that a $3 surcharge to withdraw $20 is like paying a 15 percent fee to withdraw your money.

The iPad is making appearances all over the White House
by on Jun.11, 2010, under
So if you’re wondering why it’s taking sooooooo long for any movement on health care reform or DADT it’s because bookmark php the entire White House staff is obsessed with Scrabble on their iPad’s. Just kidding. Sort of.
According to the Washington Post everywhere you look in the White House these days you see an iPad. Specifically, almost  everyone in the West Wing office of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has an iPad or an iPad on order. I guess White House security clearance doesn’t get you an iPad any faster than anyone else when there are shortages.
“Emanuel just got his, as did senior adviser and deputy press secretary Bill Burton. Both communications director and press wrangler Ben Finkenbinder have one on order. Economic adviser takes his to staff meetings.”
So of course, the Post wanted to know what apps everyone was using. I mean isn’t that the first thing you ask your friends when you’re talking about your iPads? “Summers has the Bloomberg app for financial information, says adviser Matt Vogel. Also Scrabble. And the first book he downloaded was a free copy of “The Federalist Papers.” Burton, who has been a bit of an iPad evangelist at the White House, has the app for Vanity Fair magazine, Scrabble, a news app and the entire last season of ABC’s “Lost.” Emanuel has “all the newspaper apps,” says a top aide, and has installed the iBooks app so he can read books on the device. Axelrod has only downloaded a couple of apps so far, his assistant, Eric Lesser, said. They include the Major League Baseball app and the National Public Radio one.
There’s no word on whether or not Mr. President himself has adopted an iPad, but we do know in the past his allegiance bookmark php was to the Blackberry. Â But he’s got to be a bit jealous when he sees Joe Biden on his.

The biggest problem with having Steve Jobs kick off the WWDC with the iPhone 4 announcement is that all the developer news that also happened gets buried in the press that follows. We would gladly trade three "Steve Jobs Couldn't Get Wi-Fi To Work" articles for just one great new app announcement or dongle sweetness article.
Well, we haven't forgotten that other news happens, so join the Mac|Life stafff, won't you, for all the other stuff that happened this week that isn't just about the iPhone.
Features:
- - There's not a thing in the world quite like good quality free software. And if you're a writer, there are literally hundreds of choices. We've narrowed that down to three gotta haves for your Apple products for when you just have to get that idea out onto the screen.
- - Of course, you're not going to get any writing done if you gets sucked into the gaming world on Facebook, but there are some pretty fun time killers nonetheless.
How-Tos:
- - This regular feature can help you learn a thing or two that you might not have stumbled on yourself. Want to check your iPhone data usage? Want to find an app quickly? Keep reading.
- - See, now, there are things that happen that don't involve Apple products, like the World Cup. But since our readers are Apple junkies, there must be some way to bring futbol and iProducts together. Well we've got the best of the best all ready for you to shout GOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!
Reviews:
- - The Six-String Thing - Maybe sports isn't really your thing. Or maybe just not soccer. No, maybe you're more a rocking out kinda guy. If that's the case, app developers are taking advantage of all that big screen goodness on the iPad to hook you up with plenty of six-string love.
- - While a lot of apps make use of the iPad's greater screen size to cram more stuff in, an often overlooked wonderful addition is how much more beauty you can see. Star Walk takes the familiar iPhone app and brings the gorgeous night sky and interstellar space to the big screen. And at $4.99? That's a steal, people.
News:
Of course, of course, we're getting to it. Yes, the iPhone 4 was announced, with pre-orders beginning next week and shipping out the week after. Meanwhile, in our photo gallery...and here's the rates on you'll be chewing through thanks to AT&T...plus, the list of where to buy your newest iPhone is growing as ...., though with Apple's tight price controls, it's not like they can offer quite the deep cuts they'd like to...or if you're across the pond (wondering why England could only TIE the US soccer team), ...and if this leak is to be believed, Apple plans on shipping a whole bunch of the new handsets; how many? How does sound?...just don't drop it when you get your hands on the new iPhone, because iFixYouri claims , and a lot.
Of course, the feature packed iOS 4 will be coming along shortly too, and for some people with beta versions of the software, ...maybe instead of worrying so much about rolling out iBooks, Cupertino can , as these gurus are betting the keynote gaffe was related to iOS 4's drivers...maybe someone can look into the and see if there isn't something glitchy going on in there; perhaps someone in the jailbreak community.... since Apple doesn't seem to be able to keep the dev community from , as one enterprising hacker's already jailbroken it.... of course, all that jailbreaking will need updates once iOS goes live with a , though we're sure they'll get around to it...and apparently from Cisco, much like how they got the iPhone name and the iPad from Fujitsu.
Meanwhile, the iPad's been making some news, first because AT&T is often a bag of fail and managed to leave a that Goatse Security drove a truck right through...upon driving said truck, Goatse loaded up on sensitive email addresses attached to the SIMs of these iPads, but really? ...of course we know who in government got their hands on the tablet, as many of the emails grabbed were attached to ...which means of course that now the in this...in more jolly iPad news, the continues to get new wrinkles...and Hulu better get on the stick, because mobilely speaking, netbooks are looking to be around much longer...and we can't tell if this is we've seen lately...or if these are. You tell us.

Senate committee approves auto safety upgrades
WASHINGTON — A Senate committee Wednesday approved a bill that would require automakers to meet option icon 401 usb hsupa modem new safety standards, impose stiff penalties for companies that fail to quickly report defects and double funding for the government agency overseeing car safety.
The Senate Commerce Committee plan is part of a move by lawmakers to tighten the nation’s auto safety laws following Toyota’s massive recalls.
“This is a critical public safety bill that will affect the lives of millions option icon 401 usb hsupa modem of Americans on the road,” Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., the committee’s chairman, said.
Congress hopes to approve the safety legislation by the July 4 holiday recess. It represents the most significant reforms to auto safety rules since the Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. tire recalls of a decade ago.
A House committee approved similar legislation last month.
The Senate plan would require automakers to meet new standards related to brake override systems, vehicle black boxes and auto electronics in the aftermath of Toyota Motor Corp.’s recall of more than 8 million vehicles around the globe.
Under the Senate bill, companies could face penalties of up to $300 million for option icon 401 usb hsupa modem a slow response to a recall. Toyota paid a record $16.4 million fine for its handling of a recall but critics said the penalty was not severe enough.
Safety advocates also have questioned the ability of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to protect consumers from complicated safety defects. To address those concerns, NHTSA could see its annual budget grow from $140 million to $280 million in 2013.
Separately, the Senate committee approved the creation of a $120 million grant program for states that enact laws to bar texting and driving and the use of handheld cell phones behind the wheel.
To qualify, states would need to pass new laws or amend existing ones that would prohibit texting and driving, allow law enforcement officers to have the authority to pull over motorists who use their phones behind the wheel and create option icon 401 usb hsupa modem minimum fines.

Extra Time: World Cup coverage expands greatly on the Web and sony ericsson hcb 150 bluetooth car kit retail packaging mobile phones
By Jake Coyle, APWednesday, June 9, 2010

World Cup coverage expands on the Web, cell phones
NEW YORK — With games airing live on cell phones and computers, the World Cup will get more online coverage than any major sporting event yet. Watching highlights the next day on TV or YouTube will suddenly seem a downright ancient way to keep up with the action.
When the soccer tournament begins Friday, footy fans can follow the action from an array sony ericsson hcb 150 bluetooth car kit retail packaging of mobile and Web applications and share in triumph and heartbreak across social media.
Walt Disney Co. networks ESPN and ABC, which are broadcasting the games in the U.S., will stream 54 games live on the newly launched ESPN3.com, formerly ESPN360. The games are free to those in the U.S. who get their Internet from a service provider affiliated with ESPN, including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and many others. The 10 games that will air live on ABC won’t be available on ESPN3.com, but all 64 matches in the Cup will be available live on mobile devices to customers whose plans include TV on their phones.
Univision Communications has the Spanish-language broadcasting rights in the U.S., and it, too, will have games available on Univision.com and Univision Movil.
The digital coverage will be an especially important component for the World Cup because U.S. audiences will be watching many of the games - all being played in South Africa - during the day, possibly on their computers at work.
Comparing the digital experiences of the 2010 World Cup to the 2006 World Cup, Josh Kosner, senior vice president and general manager of sony ericsson hcb 150 bluetooth car kit retail packaging ESPN Digital Media, said, “Things have changed utterly.”
“This is going to be the biggest and most powerful demonstration of this, and it’s just the start,” Kosner said. “It’s the play book, it’s the blueprint for what’s coming.”
NBC’s online coverage of the last Winter Olympics - also an international, daytime event - was extensive, drawing 45 million video streams. Traffic to NBCOlympics.com more than tripled from the 2006 Winter Games, with 45.7 million total visits compared to 13.3 million in 2006. That happened even though NBC held a lot of the footage for its prime-time broadcasts. ESPN expects worldwide online traffic for the World Cup to double or triple that of 2006.
The World Cup, a mixture of global and niche audiences - where some games mean much more to citizens of Honduras, for example - is particularly suited to the Internet. ESPN3.com, for example, will have the option to watch some games in either Portuguese, Arabic, German, Japanese or Korean.
The actual games are only part of the experience. Many media outlets have launched mobile applications, most of which feature live scores, news updates and some integration with Facebook or Twitter. Among them are apps from Fox Soccer Channel, The Associated Press, Goal.com, Mundial and sony ericsson hcb 150 bluetooth car kit retail packaging many others.
ESPN has several, including an ESPN Radio app that gives live play-by-play audio. Turner Sports’ SportsNow app promises direct linking to Facebook and Twitter to facilitate “trash-talk directly from the app.”
Online interest in the World Cup has been building. The elaborate Nike World Cup commercial directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has been watched by more than 13 million on YouTube since debuting on May 17.
For the past year, Akamai Technologies Inc., which delivers about 20 percent of the world’s Internet traffic, has been building its capability in anticipation of the World Cup. It expects traffic to be two or three times as heavy as what was measured during President Barack Obama’s inauguration - thus far, the high point for traffic volume at about 1 terabit, or 1 trillion bits of data, per second. (Higher-quality video is also a major factor in boosting volume.)
“It could well be another watershed event in terms of people understanding what is now possible to do with video online,” Akamai Chief Scientist Tom Leighton said. “This will draw a lot of people at once and that will cause people to be aware en masse that, hey, you can do some very cool things with video online that you can’t even do with broadcast right now.”
The World Cup is also shaping up to be a benchmark in the evolution of mobile TV, which is common in South Korea, growing in the rest of Asia, Africa and South America, but nascent in the U.S. and Europe. ESPN has partnered with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, FLO TV and MobiTV to bring games to cell phones.
Any surge in bandwidth for live video could test those networks, which are already clogged. Just last week, AT&T announced that to ease congestion on its network, it would no longer offer unlimited Internet data plans for new smart-phone customers.
ESPN’s Kosner acknowledged that those with live TV on their mobile phones are still a “relatively small audience,” but predicted that the World Cup will be “a galvanizing event” for the capability.
Of course, technology is also being used for more quirky ends.
If you hurry, you can catch the final ticks to the World Cup Countdown app, which has simply been counting down to kickoff in South Africa since last year.
The Drinksin Footy Pubs 2010 app lets U.K. fans know the nearest pubs carrying the games. LiveSoccerTV.com, similarly, offers “soccer friendly” bars in the U.S.
Technology truly meets soccer enthusiasm in South Korea, where a World Cup iPhone app from KT Corp. includes a “glow stick mode” that lights up the screen with fluorescent colors when the phone is shaken - perfect for exuberant waving in South Africa or anywhere near a screen playing the games.
That still leaves one, essential question: Where’s Becks?
Fear not. David Beckham, the dashing British wingman, has signed on with Yahoo Inc. as its “global football ambassador.” Along with its extensive Cup coverage (which includes a toolbar just for updates and scores), Yahoo will offer a Beckham channel to share the midfielder’s thoughts on the Cup.
Associated Press Writer Sangwon Yoon in Seoul, South Korea, contributed to this report.

Prisoner Of iTunes - The iPad File Transfer Horror
The Register's John Lettice notes that the iPad is light, compact, reasonably bookmark php capable for typing, and it has very decent battery life, which would be enough to convince him to take the device seriously for note-taking, document viewing and manipulation, and stop carrying his MacBook Air around all the time, were it not for the "you can check out, but you can't leave" dynamic that obtains.
"The iPad is a conflicted machine," Lettice opines - a media consumption device and potential productivity tool, but also considerable potential to become an infuriating device to use - in particular the difficulty in exchanging files, the iTunes tether, and the iPad's status as a big iPhone that can't make phone calls.
[Editor's note: some of these issues appear to be addressed by the iOS iPhone/iPad operating system Steve Jobs bookmark php announced yesterday, but not the file import/export constipation.]
The author observes that "It's possible to work around some of the iPad's insane file sharing restrictions using Avatron Software's Air Sharing HD, which is as essential from the point of view of sanity preservation as it is for getting stuff done."

Alan Zisman Gets an iPad
Low End Mac's Alan Zisman says:
The things I do for this column. I'm writing this just days after the Canadian release of Apple's iPad tablet computer. And just for you, dear readers, I had to get one. I only did it for you. Really.... So I'm writing this based on only 36 hours of hands-on experience. Nevertheless, that's long enough for me to reach a few samsung corby pro conclusions.
First, you won't be making an iPad your only computer. You need access to a Mac or Windows computer just to get files onto it. You can't print from it. And even though you can buy a copy of Apple's Keynote presentation software (for a very affordable $10) and get a gadget to connect it to a standard projector, the iPad's Keynote won't project your presentation.....
Apple's Pages word processor for iPad can import and export files in business-standard Microsoft Word .doc format, but loses some formatting support and lacks features you may count on in a word processor like word count, for instance.
Alan says he doesn't miss multitasking or Flash much, but does miss the ability to edit online through Google Documents, finds that the glossy screen starts showing fingerprints almost immediately, and thinks that wile the iPad is probably going to be a winner, you shouldn't expect to use it in the same ways you're using your current computer.

Hello iPad, Goodbye Netbook
Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt notes that as if Steve Jobs wasn't getting enough attention after his iPhone 4 keynote Monday, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty issued a note to clients Monday night that's basically a love song to his iPad, noting that the device iPad is on track to become the fastest ramping mobile Internet device out of the gate and at least partially responsible for a sharp drop in the growth of samsung corby pro netbook sales. Huberty thinks the netbook phenomenon may have peaked and expects tablet sales to overtake netbooks by 2012.

What Does the Mac's Non-Presence at Apple's WWDC Mean?
ITManagement's Andy Patrizio says:
the forgotten child at apple's worldwide developer conference this year was the... macintosh computer. ceo steve jobs was on stage for an hour and a half... and didn't mention the mac once....
apple shed the "computer" portion of its name in 2007,...ut the mac remained an important part of apple's family.... yet when the schedule for wwdc was announced in april,... apple had dropped the mac software category from its apple design awards.
one mac developer wrote to steve jobs to complain.... jobs responded: "we are focusing primarily (though not exclusively) on iphone os this year. maybe next year we will focus primarily on the mac. just the normal cycle of things. no hidden meaning here."
it's not that the mac has samsung corby pro suddenly become irrelevant. indeed, it's doing better than ever.
the research firm isuppli recently noted that mac enjoyed 32.4 percent year-over-year growth in the first quarter of 2010 with 2.94 million units sold, a faster growth rate than the 22.6 percent rate for the overall pc industry.
So can Jobs be taken at samsung corby pro his word? Analysts think so.

Unloved Mac: Apple Disses the Desktop Again During WWDC Keynote
PC World's Jeff Bertolucci says:
What did the Mac do to deserve this? Lately it seems as if Apple management is giving its Macintosh platform short shrift, instead favoring its younger, sexier mobile devices, also known as the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.
The latest affront occurred Monday during Steve Jobs' Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) keynote... he failed to mention that Apple was also launching Safari 5, the latest version of the company's Web browser that comes with every Mac.....
Feel the burn, Mac developers.... Apple is a 'mobile devices company.' Jobs' team has made it perfectly clear in shareholder and analyst meetings.... While that strategy may include the MacBook laptop, the Mac desktop is definitely the odd device out.... Does the Mac have a future?

RIP, Macintosh?
Newsweek says:
Is Apple ignoring its signature line of computers and laptops? Yup.
Dear Macintosh,
I hate to tell you this, but my guess is you ve probably been sensing it already. I don't know any good way to say it so let me just be blunt: You ve been dropped. Dumped. It s over.....
The future of Apple is no longer centered around the Macintosh. You Mac guys just got kicked to the curb, relegated to the steaming dung heap of the past.....

Safari 5 Off To Apple's Traditional Rough Start

Apple Adds 'Make The Web Go Away' Button To Safari 5
The Register's John Lettice reports:
Steve Jobs didn't get around to mentioning Safari 5 in his WWDC keynote last night, but it rolled out anyway shortly after he finished up, and today publishers throughout the world are surely beginning to wonder, 'hang on, what's this Reader thing?'
Safari 5 has a nice little button next to the URL that effectively kills the ads, strips off the site's branding and presents the text in nicely-formatted book-style pages.

Apple Lifted 'Make Web Go Away' Button From Open Source

Apple Safari's new "make web go away" button is based on an open source project distributed under the Apache 2 license.

Safari Reader: Apple's Weapon of Mass Destruction
Blogger Jim Lynch says
Steve Jobs gave his usual keynote address at WWDC today. The iPhone took center stage, as expected. But there was another announcement that web publishers should take note of and should dread: Safari 5.
The release of Safari 5 does not bode well for web publishers. Specifically, the inclusion of a feature called Safari Reader may ultimately prove financially devastating for many web publishers....
Apple has essentially destroyed the web publishing model completely with the release of Safari 5. This is the equivalent of dropping a nuclear bomb on the entire web economy. It's a weapon of potential mass destruction for web publishers....
We all know that Apple is an arrogant company. They've proven it many times in the past. And I say this as someone that owns an iPad, iPhone, iMac, etc. I'm not an Apple basher. But this really takes the cake......

Is Apple's Safari 5 a Publisher Killer?
Computerworld's Preston Gralla says:
The just-released Safari 5 promises faster performance, better adherence to HTML 5 standards and a few other goodies. But a nifty feature in Safari Reader also takes dead aim at online publishers, who could see significant revenue losses if Safari ever becomes popular.....a relatively small number of people use Safari compared to other browsers. But if that ever changes and Safari Reader becomes popular, it may spell very bad news for any Web site looking for revenue.

First look: Safari 5's Extensions
Macworld's Marco Tabini says that few new browser features are more prominent than the arrival of an extensions system, and with a Safari 5 extension system in place, developers are in position to augment the functionality provided by the browser itself, letting users add to Safari all sorts of capabilities that had previously been the domain of hacks and workarounds.

A First Overview and Roundup of Safari Extensions
MacStories' Federico Viticci says:
One of the most important features of Safari 5 is support for extensions: it s what Safari users had been wanting for a very long time, and it s a big deal. It s a big deal for users who want to customize their browser the way they want, it s a huge deal for developers who may start to charge for full-featured extensions in the future. Just think about Twitter clients or RSS apps living inside the browser.

Microsoft’s going the Google way to offer its widely used and highly-priced Office Suite Online for free. The Redmond company offers free online office components that comprises Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote as a part of free online suite called Office Web Apps. That said, the online edition of the Microsoft Office is an substantial development for consumers in the current round of updates. Overtly, it projects Microsoft’s commitment to cloud htc po m461 leather case with belt clip computing - - promoting applications online instead of desktop programs. On a broader perspective it seems the software giant is all set to take on the rivals such as Google and Zoho offering online office suites. With a week’s time for the release of new version of traditional desktop Microsoft Office version - Office 2010, we decided on an extensive comparison with online version. Before you set out to purchase the desktop version, you need to see whether the online version of Office Suite has enough to do with.
In order to use the free Office Web Suite you need to visit the office.live.com. To work on the new online Office you will need a free account for the company’s broader Windows Live onilne service.
The Office Web Apps run smoothly on all major browsers - Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari htc po m461 leather case with belt clip and Chrome. As is expected, the online version of Office suite lacks some of the local desktop version of Office. Microsoft is trying to ensure that the profitability of its Desktop suite is not compromised. Then, why did Microsoft launch the online Office Web Apps? The software major is draws a line between the two versions — referring the Office Web Apps as a companion to desktop Office for “light” work.
Let’s take a look at the major pros and cons of using the Office Web Apps over Office 2010

The new Web Apps boasts of a 25 gigabytes of free online storage for the documents, via a companion Microsoft online storage system called SkyDrive. The Office Web Apps produce documents that use the same file formats as the desktop programs. The desktop program gets fully accurate when it is opened in desktop Office. This is clearly fidelity. In the tests the claim is held true, at least on my Windows PC.

In the wake of Monday’s iPhone 4 sony ericsson cds 75 desk stand introduction, Apple has been the target of sharp criticism from some industry watchers and rivals looking to dispute some of the claims it made regarding the handset’s new Retina Display.
Apple says new display sports four times as many pixels as that of the existing iPhone 3GS, with a resolution of 960×640, 326 pixels per inch, and backed by the same advanced IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology used in the iPad. During his keynote presentation at the company’s annual developers conference, chief executive Steve Jobs asserted that the resolution of the new display was higher than “the limit of the human retina,” which he noted as 300 ppi at 10- to 12-inches away.
In response to this, display expert Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, contributed to an article over at PC World rebutting the claim. AppleInsider has previously referenced Soneira’s extensive display critiques of both the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS. In his most recent analysis, Soneira claims that the actual distinguishable resolution of the human retina is 477 ppi at a distance of 12 inches. According to his calculations, the iPhone 4’s display wouldn’t be a true retina display unless it was designed to be held at a distance of at least 18 inches from the eye, much farther than standard use for a mobile handset.
Soneira’s comments were picked up by several sony ericsson cds 75 desk stand major news outlets, including Reuters, Fox News and Wired, some of which expanded on those claims to accuse Apple of false advertising.
As numerous blogs sites continued coverage of the matter, some of the facts became further distorted, causing an eventual backlash against the criticism of false marketing. Discover Magazine blogger Phil Plait (link 4), who previously worked on the Hubble Telescope, sided with Apple by noting that Soneira’s math assumes perfect eyesight, whereas the average person would be unable to distinguish the iPhone’s sony ericsson cds 75 desk stand pixels at a distance of a foot.
Jobs’ WWDC keynote also drew criticism for the use of comparison graphics between the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 displays that some pundits have similarly deemed as misleading. Digital Society, a non-profit think tank, alleged that Jobs during the keynote falsely propped the iPhone 4’s dispay with graphics that show an iPhone 4 resolution as high as 815 ppi, and up to 489 ppi on a separate Apple advertisement.
Adding to the controversy was global electronics maker Samsung, who joined the conversation by touting its AMOLED technology, which will be used in its recently announced Galaxy S, as superior to sony ericsson cds 75 desk stand the newly released Retina Display. A spokesperson for the electronics maker told The Korea Herald (link 6) that although the iPhone has a higher resolution, “visibility difference is only 3 to 5 percent,” while consuming significantly more power than its own technology.
The LCD-IPS display used in the iPhone 4 is manufactured by LG, one of Samsung’s primary rivals. For its part, research firm iSuppli believes that the competition between Apple and Google is bound spill over into a battle between LCD-IPS displays and AMOLED displays. Vinita Jakhanwal, a principal analyst for the firm, similarly sided with Apple, saying that while the Nexus One “upped the ante” for handset displays with its AMOLED display, the iPhone 4 “has raised the bar even further” with its LCD-IPS Retina display.
